Coveringsome70%oftheEarth’ssurface,theoceanisamajordriveroftheworld’sweatherandclimate.Italsoplaysacentralroleinclimatechange.Theoceanisalsoamajordriveroftheglobaleconomy,carryingmorethan90%ofworldtradeandsustainingthe40%ofhumanitythatliveswithinkmofthecoast.Recognizingthis,NationalMeteorologicalandHydrologicalServicesandresearchersregularlymonitortheoceanandhowitischanging,modelinghowitaffectstheatmosphereanddeliveringawidevarietyofmarineservices,includingsupportingcoastalmanagementandSafetyofLifeatSea.Today,thegrowingimpactsofclimatechangearemakingoceanobservations,researchandservicesmorecriticalthaneverbefore.

TheWorldMeteorologicalDaytheme-Theocean,ourclimateandweather–celebratesWMO’sfocusinconnectingtheocean,climateandweatherwithintheEarthSystem.ItalsomarksthelaunchoftheUnitedNationsDecadeofOceanScienceforSustainableDevelopment(01-).TheDecadegalvanizeseffortstogatheroceanscience–throughinnovativeandtransformativeideas-asthebasisofinformationtosupportsustainabledevelopment.WMO,astheUnitedNationsspecializedagencyforclimate,weatherandwater,strivestosupportunderstandingtheinextricablelinkbetweenocean,climateandweather.Thishelpsusunderstandtheworldinwhichwelive,includingtheimpactsofclimatechange,andtohelpMemberstostrengthentheirabilitytokeeplivesandpropertysafe–reducingtheriskofdisaster–andtomaintainviableeconomies.
